Registry Fix for Windows Code 19 Error

The Windows Code 19 Error is usually found relating to Optical Drive Hardware. It indicates a corrupt registry entry for the registry key which controls the CD/DVD Drive. The error code is shown in the Device Manager.

The symptoms are usually:

  • CD/DVD Drive is missing from "My Computer"(XP) / "Computer"(Vista/7)
  • The CD/DVD Drive will not recognise any discs when inserted. Discs will not auto run or load at all.
  • Disc burning software will report No Drive Present when trying to create a disc.
  • I am aware that there is a Windows update which affects most CD/DVD Drives found in the current range of Acer laptops and desktop PC's. The Aspire 5000,6000 and Timeline series laptops seem regularly affected by this, also the Acer X Series Mini-ATX desktop PC's.

Firstly you need to confirm it is definitely a Code 19 Error. This is done by opening the Device Manager, looking for the DVD/CD-ROM Drives entry. Click on the small plus symbol to the left. Now you can see the name of the drive itself shown. Right Click on the name of the drive and choose Properties. In the dialogue box which appears, there will be a field labelled Device Status. If you see "Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)" then try the methods below.

There are two methods to try:

    METHOD ONE

  • Power computer on
  • Tap F8
  • From the menu, select Last Known Good Configuration
  • Let Windows boot, then log in as normal.
  • Check "My Computer" to see if your CD/DVD Drive has appeared.
  • If you can see the drive, this method worked! If you can't, proceed to Method Two below.

  • METHOD TWO

  • Open the Run box and type regedit
  • This opens the registry editor which is built into Windows
  • On the folder tree on the left, navigate to the registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • In the right pane, you will see several entries. The top entry should read DVD/CD-ROM Drives
  • Below that you will see an entry labelled LowerFilters and further below that UpperFilters
  • Right click on LowerFilters and choose Delete
  • Right click on UpperFilters and choose Delete
  • PLEASE NOTE: You may see the entry UpperFilters.bak. There is no need to delete this.
  • Close the registry editor and restart your computer
  • When you boot back into Windows, check "My Computer"/"Computer". The CD/DVD Drive will be present.
  • And that will fix the issue. I have noticed this problem is most common in Windows Vista
